Position Summary:

The microscopist is responsible for oversight, maintenance and optimization of an electron microscope and direct electron detector. Responsibilities will include operation of the equipment, training of students and postdocs, collection of data, and preparation of biological samples for cryo-electron microscopy and other related duties and tasks as required or assigned.

Additional Information:

Lab studies the proteins of viruses like Ebola, Marburg and Lassa, using structural biology and cellular analysis to understand how the very few proteins encoded by these viruses achieve a tremendous array of functions throughout the virus life cycle. Although the lab is primarily a structural biology lab, we direct a five-continent collaboration of academic, industrial and government scientists and clinicians. Hence, there is the unique opportunity here to see how the structures fit into the cellular, organismal and population contexts and to use structural biology as a roadmap to help develop much-needed vaccines and therapeutics.
Will have primary responsibility for data collection and oversight of a dedicated 300 keV Titan Halo with a Falcon II detector and for training of incoming students to the lab. research experience in cryo-EM with strong interest and expertise in instrumentation.

Basic Qualifications:

Requires a bachelor’s degree in relevant scientific discipline or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been attained. Requires 3-5 years of related experience in techniques of sample preparation/electron microscopy.
Experience in biological single particle cryoEM required.
Must have excellent problem solving skills and strong attention to detail.
Must be able to work independently and as a part of a team. Excellent microtome sectioning skills are essential.
Requires professional level verbal, written and interpersonal skills and the ability to work with faculty and scientific staff to develop highly specialized applications.

Preferred Qualifications:

Ph.D. or equivalent experience in electron microscopy.
Expertise in use, maintenance and troubleshooting of high-end electron microscopes, particularly FEI instruments.
Experience in data collection, analysis and processing for biological cryoelectron microscopy.

Compensation: Salary is commensurate with experience.
