Position Title Communications, Senior Manager
Position Summary:

The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) is currently seeking a Communications, Senior Manager for its Florida facility. The selected candidate will report to the VP of Communications & Development and manage communications programs for Jupiter, Florida. This role manages TSRI’s external and internal communications, marketing and media relations programs through the development, execution and implementation of a broad strategy to enhance the public awareness of TSRI while supporting the core scientific, academic, development and administrative objectives of the institute.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
• Manage marketing and communications and public relations in Florida according to institute priorities
• Manage media relations, including writing and distributing press releases and advisories, managing media lists, interacting with reporters, and coordinating with scientists, journals, colleagues at other academic institutions, as well as funding agencies, including the NIH, corporate and community foundations.
• Develop communications strategy along with the VP of Communications & Development, manage communication for site emergencies and breaking news, and participate in emergency planning.
• Work closely with the Development Department on marketing materials, including writing proposals and letters, overseeing web page and newsletter design, and contributing to other fundraising and event material as needed.
• Participate in government relations, including producing and reviewing communications such as letters, texts and handouts.
• Manage the communications portions of the website for the Florida campus.
• Manage portions of the online newsletter, News & Views, for both internal and external audiences, including editorial direction, writing, photography, graphics, and production.
• Support social media presence for the institute, including content and design elements on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Pinterest.
• Oversee other general publications and brochures, including graphic and logo use, and editorial standards.
• Supervise tours of select visitors and special delegations, including meetings and presentations about the institute.
• Performs other duties and projects as necessary or assigned.

Physical Requirements:

This position works in a typical office environment. With or without reasonable accommodation, employees in this position must be able to sit and type at a computer terminal for up to 8 hours per day with appropriate breaks and perform tasks that require fine dexterity and repetitive motions using the arms, hands, wrists and fingers. Further details of the physical requirements of established essential functions for this position will be addressed/discussed during the interview process.

Basic Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Media Relations, Public Relations, Public Affairs, Journalism or equivalent relevant discipline or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
• 8+ years communications management experience, showing progressively responsible and related experience in writing and editing articles and press releases, marketing, public and media relations, including knowledge and experience managing social media presence.
• Supervisory or management experience including people, projects and budgets.
• Excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills, extensive experience performing corporate communication programs.
• Preferred experience in medical/scientific writing.
• Strong Microsoft Office skills (Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and Adobe Creative Suite skills.
• Ability to stay abreast of and understand shifting trends in traditional and social media communications.

Preferred Qualifications:

Florida and Palm Beach County residents are preferred.
